There is nothing that screams fall and the holidays to me more than an apple crisp. But while my apple blueberry crisp has a topping with oats, this is an apple crisp recipe without oats! Don’t worry though – I promise the topping is just as good.

This recipe is unbelievably easy to throw together – I swear the hardest part is just chopping up all the apples! The juicy apple filling smells SO good before you even take the apple crumble out of the oven and it has what I consider the perfect filling to topping ratio.

This apple crumble without oatmeal is an excellent way to use up a lot of apples, since it uses around 6 apples. It’s also an ideal dessert to bring to Thanksgiving and serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

The Best Apples To Use

I tested this recipe with a variety of different kinds of apples, and while many are similar, there are a few key differences.

Sweetness: Some apples are more tart and less sweet than others. That being said, it is totally up to your preference whether you’d like your apple crisp on the sweeter side or the less sweet side. If you want it less sweet, use Granny Smith apples as they are the most tart option.

Crispiness: In my recipe testing process I found that softer apples, like Red Delicious and even some MacIntosh apples, got too mushy when baked. It is much better to use a firmer, crispier apple like Granny Smith, Braeburn, or Pink Lady.

  • Apples: I tested this recipe with peeled apples and without peeling the apples and wasn’t able to detect a difference, so you can definitely leave the peel on if you want to save time!
  • Butter: This apple crumble has been tested with dairy (I like salted) butter and dairy free butter, so use whichever you prefer. If you want to make the crisp completely dairy free, serve it with dairy free vanilla ice cream or this easy homemade dairy free whipping cream!

Easy Apple Crumble with No Oats

This homemade apple crumble with no oats is a yummy cozy classic that is perfect for fall. It's nostalgic, warm-spiced, and so easy to make. It can be made with regular dairy butter or dairy free!

Ingredients

Apple Filling

  • 6 cups apples, chopped into 1"-2" cubes, or thinly sliced, (peeled or unpeeled)
  • ⅓ cup (67 g) light brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp (16 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg, (optional)

Topping

  • 1½ cup (188 g) all purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (150 g) light brown sugar
  • ⅔ cup (140 g) butter, softened, (regular or vegan)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Instructions

Apple Filling

  • Preheat the oven to 350° Fahrenheit.
  • Add the chopped apples into the 1.5 quart baking dish you will use for baking (or a large bowl if preferred). Add brown sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg. Toss until evenly coated. If using a bowl, transfer the mixture to your baking dish.

Topping

  • In a medium bowl, add flour, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and butter. Use your hands, a fork, or a pastry cutter to mix everything together until it's fully combined.
  • Sprinkle the crisp mixture evenly over top of the apples. Bake for 30-40 minutes, until the top is a light golden brown.
  • Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream (dairy free or regular). Enjoy!

Equipment

1 1.5 quart baking dish (or an 8 inch baking dish)

Notes

Apples: any variety works, but a firm, crisp apple is better than a soft mushy one like Red Delicious. Keep in mind that using a tart apple (like Granny Smith), will give you a less sweet apple crumble than a sweeter apple will.
