This creamy Oreo buttercream frosting is packed with crushed Oreo pieces. If you’re an Oreo cookie lover you have to try it! It goes perfectly with cakes, cupcakes, and cookies! Best of all – it can be made with dairy ingredients or completely dairy free.

This rich cookies and cream frosting starts with an American buttercream base. It has finely crushed up Oreo cookies throughout, but you can also keep some larger pieces of Oreo cookies in there for a nice added crunch!

I use this silky smooth buttercream in my Oreo red velvet cake, where I purposely leave some of the Oreos in bigger pieces! I find this works better for cakes than for cupcakes. For cupcakes, you’ll want to stick to just crushed Oreos so that larger pieces don’t get stuck in the piping tip.

What Recipes to Pair with this Oreo Buttercream Recipe

  • This Oreo buttercream would be wonderful with vanilla cupcakes.
  • You can also pair this frosting with cookies, brownies, and blondies! I love to add it on top of soft sugar cookies.
  • Lastly, of course this buttercream is amazing on a classic two layer vanilla or chocolate cake. But it would also be delicious on my cookie dough cake because double the cookies = double the fun!

Ingredient Notes

  • Butter: You can use either regular dairy butter (I prefer salted), or dairy free butter with this recipe. It has been tested both ways!
  • Oreos: When I was recipe testing, the classic Oreos worked best over the double stuffed or thin ones. You can also use flavored Oreos if you want to, like mint, golden, or peanut butter!

Recipe Developer Tips

  • There are various ways to crush up the Oreos, it mostly depends on your preference. You can use a food processor, finely crush them with a knife, or you can add the Oreos to a plastic bag, then roll a rolling pin over to crush them up.
  • Wait until you’ve combined the butter, salt, vanilla, and powdered sugar before decided whether to add in the milk. The milk should only be added in if you need to thin out the Oreo icing.
  • If the opposite happens and you need to thicken the Oreo frosting, just add in more powdered sugar, a little at a time until it looks right!

Easy 5 Minute Oreo Buttecream

This Oreo buttercream frosting is packed with crushed Oreo pieces. If you're an Oreo cookie lover you have to try it! It goes perfectly with cakes, cupcakes, and cookies!

Ingredients

  • cup (315 g) butter, softened, (regular or vegan)
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2⅓-3½ cups (300) powdered sugar (icing sugar/confectioners sugar)
  • 1-2 teaspoons milk – only if needed!, (regular or vegan)
  • 15 Oreo cookies, crushed into crumbs, (plus more for decorating)

Instructions

  • Leave the filling in the Oreos and crush them up using a blender or food processor. You can also put them in a ziploc bag and go over them with a rolling pin. Set the crushed Oreos aside. If there are larger pieces, that's okay but you likely will have to spread the frosting rather than use a piping bag because cookie pieces can block the piping tip.
  • In a medium bowl, use a handheld mixer or standing mixer to mix the butter, vanilla extract, salt, then slowly add in the powdered sugar, ½ cup at a time until it reaches your desired consistency.
  • If it seems too thick, add in about 1-2 teaspoon of milk to thin it out. Mix in the crushed Oreos.

Equipment

1 standing mixer or handheld mixer

Notes

Storage and Freezing: Place any leftover buttercream in the fridge or freezer. Buttercream can be frozen in an air tight container and then thawed at room temperature before using. You can use a mixer to mix it up once thawed to make it fluffy again!
