The flax egg is going to give structure and moisture to your baked good, and it doesn’t have a strong taste.

The recipe below is for one flax egg, which equals one egg, so keep that in mind!

Ingredients Needed

  • Flaxseed: Make sure to use milled or ground flaxseed, not whole flaxseeds. There are two types of flaxseed – dark and golden flax. You can use either but they’ll have a slightly different taste. 
  • Water: Make sure you use warm water!

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1: Mix the ground flaxseed and warm water in a small bowl together with a fork. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes at room temperature or the fridge (the fridge will speed up the process)

Step 2: The flax egg is ready when it’s thick and gelatinous. Use in your baking recipe!

Expert Tips

  • If after 10-15 minutes, you get a layer of water on top of the mixture, give it another stir!
  • Don’t have flaxseed? Swap it out for chia seeds
  • If you need to substitute a flax egg for 2 eggs, then double the recipe. 
  • I recommend only using vegan flax eggs for baking recipes, and not something like an omelette or an egg-based recipe. This vegan egg substitute works best in flour based recipes. 
  • If you only have whole flaxseeds, make sure you grind them. You can grind them using a mortar and pestle, coffee or spice grinder, or mini food processor!

Easy Flax Egg Recipe (Vegan Egg Substitute)

Ingredients
 

  • 1 Tablespoon ground/milled flaxseed
  • Tablespoons warm water

Instructions
 

  • Combine the flax and warm water in a bowl and stir with a fork until fully combined. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes either at room temperature or in the fridge (fridge will speed things up a little).
  • If a layer of water forms on top of the mixture, give it another stir before using. The flax egg is ready when it's thick and goopy and has an egg-like consistency

This recipe makes one flax egg which equals one egg in recipes that allow a flax egg to be substituted. Please see post above for more details and examples of these types of recipes.
To make two flax eggs, double the recipe.
Chia seeds substitution: you can substitute the flax for chia seeds at a 1:1 ratio.
Golden flax can be used but will have a slightly different flavor.
